Empaths – let’s talk about this for a moment…
The Bible says:
Deut. 18:11 – “And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to God.”
2 Kings 21:6 – “Mannaseh also sacrificed his own son in the fire. He practiced sorcery and divination, and he consulted with mediums & psychics. He did much that was evil in the Lord’s sight, arousing his anger.”
2 Kings 23:24 – “Josiah also got rid of the mediums & psychics, the household gods, the idols and every kind of detestable practice, both in Jerusalem and thru out the land of Judah. He did this in OBEDIENCE to the laws written in the scroll that Hilkiah the priest had found in the Lord’s temple.
Empath definition: a person with the paranormal ability to apprehend the mental or emotional state of another individual.
The mechanism for being an empath is said to be psychic channeling.
This is as clear as it gets.
I’ve noticed an influx of Christians (women in particular) claiming the title of “empath” and I want to set the record straight.
As Christians, we have been warned numerous times in the Word about how God feels about these practices. They are DETESTABLE in His sight.
Many years ago, I found a counselor online who claimed to be a Christian and used her religion to help her patients. With high hopes, I divulged years of trauma and saw her regularly for a few weeks. It wasn’t until I heard her say the words, “I think you are an empath” that the Spirit within me started to recoil. Even without knowing the extent of what the Scriptures read on the topic, something did not sit right with me when she used my emotional tendencies to define me as a person and assign a title to who she believed I was.
As soon as I got home, I began doing research on her assessment of me and realized that her “Christian practice” was misrepresenting the Word of God entirely.
I want to challenge you.
If you’ve heard the term or been coined as this term, rebuke it. As a child of God, you absolutely ARE NOT an empath.
The Lord and our many life endeavors have created different personalities and characteristics in us. Some possess more empathy than others. Some find it easier to confront others. Some have a hard time hanging out in big crowds due to being overwhelmed. The list goes on and on.
To attach ourselves to a coined phrase that is linked solely to New Age practices and has drastically gained popularity since the early 2000’s is a misrepresentation of who we are as Christians.
If it doesn’t feel right, test the spirit. If there is confusion, bring it to God. DO NOT accept what the world has to offer, period point blank. Deception is real and the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion. 1 Peter 5:8
Stand strong in your faith and your convictions and always bring every thought obedient to the Word of God.
